When this young family managed to secure an original fibro cottage across the road from the beach, they know it was the opportunity to create something special. Embarking on a back-to-studs renovation isn’t for the faint hearted, but with a clever design that could be completed in sections the clients and their children were able to remain in the home as it metamorphosed around them. The brief was for a renovation that made use of the original footprint but arranged the spaces more practically for family living. Small dark rooms were out and open and light-filled spaces created the perfect home for a relaxed beachside lifestyle. The traditional weatherboard and stone exterior looks right at home with the large and original frangipani, and to the rear, outdoor living areas are perfect for entertaining and catching the sun before a dip. A freestanding studio was created for the work-from-home clients and rounds out the home’s features. The appeal here is that despite high-end materials and top quality design and craftsmanship, this home has simplicity and is unpretentious. With its gables, traditional style windows and chimney it feels like it could have overlooked the beach for 100 years or so.
